MOTORHOME CLEANING — A SAFE, PRACTICAL & EFFICIENT GUIDE

Looking for tips on how to clean a motorhome? Then you’ve come to the right place. Motorhome cleaning can be tricky, and a professional deep clean can be expensive. So we’ve gathered here all the best motorhome cleaning tips so that you can do it yourself and save money.Let’s get started…

How to clean a motorhome roof / motorhome roof cleaning

Cleaning the roof of a motorhome is where you will want to start. As water will inevitably pour down the sides as you do it, which could ruin the sides if they have already been cleaned.

Cleaning the roof of a motorhome will require a sturdy ladder and we would recommend having a partner to support this ladder, and also to ‘spot’ you for optimal health and safety.

The process is similar for anyone looking for information about how to clean a caravan roof or for cleaning RV roofs. Check out the following graphic (below) for the right cleaning motorhome roof equipment, and for a simple step-by-step guide on how to do it.

Cleaning a motorhome roof with a pressure washer can deliver great results if done so carefully and sensibly. But only on the open body of the roof. Be careful not to use it on joints, vents and fixings, where the pressure can cause damage.

Note: If you are looking for tips on cleaning camper van roof windows, well the process is much the same as cleaning the ordinary windows on the body. Scroll down to our ‘Cleaning the Windows’ section below for more information.

Cleaning motorhome windows

Cleaning motorhome, RV and caravan windows is a fairly straightforward process. Simply use warm water and a sponge to get rid of most of the dirt and grime.

The tricky part comes with the drying and the finishing up because there are horror stories of people scratching (and therefore damaging) their windows during the cleaning process.

But you can avoid this problem by using an acrylic-friendly glass cleaner. As the name suggests, this is perfect for cleaning acrylic motorhome windows and camper van roof windows. Use the right cleaner and wipe down with a lint-free microfiber cloth and everything should turn out OK and scratch-free.

Cleaning motorhome solar panels

Cleaning solar panels is straightforward enough — you can’t go wrong with just a sponge and some dishwasher cleaner. Frequent washing will also help your solar panel function better. You can even wax solar motorhome exterior panels.

Because they contain small complex parts, we do not recommend cleaning solar panels with a pressure washer. The high velocity of the water can damage your solar panels. Stick with the humble sponge and elbow grease instead.

Motorhome exterior cleaning

The biggest job is cleaning the motorhome exterior panels. This is also the easiest job, even if it is one of the most time-consuming. You can speed up the process with a caravan washing brush for much of the body, but cleaning the motorhome exterior trim will require a more delicate touch.

The best motorhome cleaning products are the humble soapy water and cleaning mitt, along with the two-bucket method. This method is as simple as it sounds. Simply fill up two buckets, one with soapy warm water and the other with regular cold water, using the cold water to rinse your wash mitt.

This process works just as well on any caravan exterior trim as it does on motorhomes, RVs and camper vans.

Motorhome hygiene during and sanitation during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic

Proper motorhome cleaning has probably never been more important than it is now. And as a motorhome cleaner, you will have to get into the habit of taking steps to fight the coronavirus each time you enter, and especially if you have been in close contact with others or in public spaces.

This includes cleaning motorhome interiors with wipes and disinfectant to kill surfaces where the virus might live. Make sure to keep Covid-19 motorhome cleaning equipment with you at all times and apply it to surfaces that you touch often. Notably the steering wheel, gear stick, dashboard buttons, and so on.

The same applies to those looking for caravan cleaning tips as they do for RV cleaning tips.

The motorhome pressure washer debate — what should you do?

The community is pretty divided on the motorhome pressure washer debate. Some people would never even think to use one. Others see the benefit in a quick, clean water jet power washer for motorhomes.

So, is it safe to pressure wash a motorhome? Is it OK to pressure wash a roof? There’s no real answer, only opinions. In the below graphic, we’ve compiled the most common ‘for’ and ‘against’ points in the great RV pressure washer debate.
